Volunteer Program

The volunteer program at Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS grew out of our need for people to help with the productions of our major fund-raising events throughout the year. As a fund-raising organization which is essentially event-driven, we have no regularly-scheduled volunteer sessions but bring in "the troops" as needed. These office volunteers are separate from the many volunteers within the companies of shows who raise money for us throughout the year here in NYC and around the country. Volunteers help with such tasks as mailings, flyer and poster distribution, passing out red ribbons at the Tony Awards and Daytime Emmys and other events, ushering, program stuffing and distribution as well as picking up donated merchandise and collecting contributions at events around the city.

We now have close to 250 volunteers from all 5 boroughs as well as Westchester County, New Jersey and Connecticut. They run the gamut in age from 15 through mid-70's. Many are involved in show business and many are retirees but we also have high school and college student interns, accountants, bankers, lawyers, teachers and a speech therapist. We even have a Wall Street broker in our ranks.

In addition to the much-needed boost our volunteers give to BC/EFA, we are able to offer help to other organizations who haven't the volunteer muscle we have. Mothers' Voices and Classical Action make use of our volunteers and have in return provided us with some of our best workers. We have helped staff the Better Wellness and You Health Fairs for the Broadway community and provide quite a few volunteers for the annual Stephen J. Falat Holiday Basket Project run by Actors' Equity.

While the reasons people volunteer here are as varied as their ages and backgrounds, they all have at least two things in common--they love the theatre and they want to help men, women and children with HIV/AIDS. Several of our volunteers are HIV positive and a number of them have AIDS.

Our volunteers bring an energy and excitement into the office and to our events. They help spread the name and mission of BC/EFA. Indeed they expand our mission by making Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS much more than a place to contribute money, but also a place people can come to help their friends and co-workers and channel their sorrow, anger and frustration.

BC/EFA is lucky to have this support; we truly couldn't accomplish what we do without our invaluable volunteers.
